Technology

What’s In the Future?

Actually nobody knows, but we do know some things. For example DOS applications without year 2000 compatibility, graphics or mouse support are "short timers". The jury is still out on networking systems such as Novell’s NetWare and others. We do know that Microsoft with Windows NT continues to gain market share, especially in the small and medium sized businesses. Would you not prefer a product with a future growth path?

Commercial Success

You may wonder why the technology of a product is important to you? After all, you want to use a product reliably and economically for years to come. Well, the base technology affects the product cost, support cost, enhancement or bug fix turnaround time and most importantly future growth and support. Premium Finance Manager 98 is based on the latest database product from Microsoft – Access 97. Microsoft is the world’s leading software company and Access is the best selling database ever! In order to keep cost down and ensure long term availability a product has to be popular, i.e. a commercial success.

Quick Response

The newer development tools are easier to use and increase product reliability, that is the nature of progress. Easier tools means fewer hours of development and testing while increasing product quality and reliability. For example, to calculate precisely the APR previously required some complex math and programming. Now Microsoft has included and verified financial functions in Access, thus no programming is required. The less time spent programming means fewer bugs and quicker turnaround. New reports can be generated in one to two hours, not days or weeks. In fact the quicker turnaround time can be a real "life saver" in today’s business climate.

Quality Support

Most people and companies like to provide quality support. So why do some do and others don’t? One reason is the ease with which support personnel can help the customer. By using modern tools, problems can be rapidly isolated and corrected. Then using online tools the customer’s system may be quickly updated. These same tools can be used to remotely show how to perform a particular operation, much better than hand waving over the telephone.

Expansion

The base Premium Finance Manager 98 product has no limit on the number of contracts supported. Items such as disk capacity and system performance will be the limiting factor. With today’s Pentium processors and multi-gigabyte disk, Premium Finance Manager 98 can reliably support tens-of-thousands of contracts. The other way to expand is to add users. Access is a multi-user database with built in networking support.

Multi-user

Premium Finance Manager 98 can be networked either in a peer-to-peer or server based fashion. Peer-to-peer networking is included with Windows 95 and Windows 98. This is the most economical method to expand up to around 12 simultaneous users, depending on system resources. Once network performance becomes a bottleneck it is time to upgrade to a server based system such as Windows NT or Novell NetWare. Either way Premium Finance Manager 98 will be there with you.
